EchoStar HDX-410 set-top box runs native ICS, supports terrestrial broadcasts (hands-on video)

EchoStar HDX410 settop box runs native Android 40, supports terrestrial broadcasts handson video

You may be familiar with EchoStar's satellite-based (Dish Network) and Sling Media (Slingbox) products, but the company also manufactures set-top boxes for third-party providers, as well as free-to-air services in the UK. It's this last grouping that'll be able to take advantage of the Android-based device we saw today, assuming it does in fact make its way to market. The HDX-410 runs native Ice Cream Sandwich, and is available in two versions -- one supports IP content and local storage exclusively, while a second can also accept terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) programming, letting you play back live TV shows in addition to content from a local server, pulled from the web or stored on attached media or an inserted microSD card. It connects to the web using Ethernet or WiFi, and includes USB ports on both the front and the rear, Bluetooth, HDMI out, digital audio out and a standard-definition connection. It's also paired with a QWERTY keyboard-equipped remote manufactured by Philips with gyroscopic or directional-pad curser control, along with pinch/zoom gesture capability.

We had a chance to check out the ICS box at EchoStar's IBC booth today, where the device was running Android 4.0.4 and an early version of the company's hybrid app, which groups "favorited" content alongside terrestrial channels, letting you use the standard channel up/down button to navigate through stored TV shows, IP content or live programming quite seamlessly, as if all of the media was playing from the same source. It's clearly not yet ready for primetime, but the interface was sleek and speedy -- the set-top box performed very well overall. EchoStar reps were unable to confirm whether or not the HDX-410 would be coming to market at all, but they did add that the solution may be made available to third-parties in the future. Click past the break to take a closer look in our hands-on video.

CELEBNAME

Bill Bomar, who the singer/songwriter has credited with sparking his interest in music, is struggling with a number of serious medical problems. and they'll keep him from attending the "Sexyback" singer's big day when he exchanges vows with Jessica Biel.

The Grammy winner's grandmother, Sadie Bomar, tells Star magazine, "My husband, Bill, has had problems with his heart for a while now and is undergoing a major heart surgery soon. Bill also suffers from dementia, making it tough to care for him.

Medicare Annual 2012 Open Enrollment Period - Disabled World

? Medical Information ? Health Care ? ? U.S. Medicare

Information provided by Allsup - Published: 2012-09-06

Allsup Explains What's New for Medicare Annual Open Enrollment Period - Medicare annual open enrollment begins Oct. 15; new benefit choices take effect Jan. 1, 2013 - In just a few weeks, millions of people will receive notice that Medicare's annual open enrollment period is approaching. That means it's time to review their current coverage and decide if they would benefit from switching plans for 2013, according to Allsup, a nationwide provider of Medicare plan selection services and Social Security disability representation.

During the Medicare annual enrollment period, Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, all Medicare beneficiaries may change their Medicare coverage for the coming year. This includes anyone using traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage and prescription drug coverage.

?By closely reviewing your Medicare coverage from this year and changes you expect in 2013, it?s possible to see savings with your healthcare costs,? said Mary Dale Walters, vice president of Allsup and the Allsup Medicare Advisor(R), a Medicare plan selection service for Medicare-eligible individuals. ?It?s important to get started early.?

In addition to reviewing Medicare plan changes, beneficiaries should make sure they are taking advantage of savings provided through the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

?The healthcare law is helping reduce prescription drug costs by gradually phasing out the donut hole, which is when Medicare beneficiaries must pay for medications out of their own pockets,? Walters said. ?It also has made it easier to take advantage of preventive medical services through Medicare.?

What To Expect: Medicare Coverage 2013

Since it was passed, the ACA has helped nearly 18 million individuals with traditional Medicare get at least one preventive service at no cost with no deductibles or co-pays. The law also has helped nearly 5.4 million people with Medicare save more than $4.1 billion in out-of-pocket expenses on prescription drugs as it closes the Medicare Part D donut hole, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS).

As these benefits continue, Medicare beneficiaries can expect the following with their 2013 coverage:

  • * Medicare recipients reaching the drug donut hole will benefit from increased coverage. The gap in prescription drug coverage starts when someone reaches the initial coverage limit, estimated at $2,970 for 2013, and ends when they have spent $4,750. (These are increases of $40 and $50, respectively, from 2012.) Catastrophic coverage begins at this point. During the donut hole, all costs are covered by individuals out of their own pocket. In 2013, individuals who reach the donut hole can receive a 50 percent discount on covered brand name drugs (the same as 2012), as well as 2.5 percent of coverage now paid by plans. Generic drug discounts increase to 21 percent from 14 percent.
  • * Cost for Medicare Part B coverage may increase. The 2012 monthly premium for Medicare Part B (medical insurance) coverage is $99.90, a decline from 2011. Preliminary forecasts indicate that Part B premiums are likely to increase for 2013. Factors such as the rollout of the Affordable Care Act and the federal fiscal year 2013 budget may affect the cost of premiums in 2013; however, more detailed information probably won?t be available until Medicare?s annual open enrollment period begins Oct. 15.
  • * Prescription drug (Part D) increases deductible; holds on premium costs. The Part D initial deductible will increase by $5 to $325 in 2013. Drug cost sharing during catastrophic coverage is $2.65 for generic or preferred drugs (multi-use source) and $6.60 for all other drugs. Premium costs in 2013 are expected to stay constant, averaging $30 per month (compared to $29.67 per month in 2012), according to the HHS. In addition to costs, individuals should review how any changes to drugs covered under their plan could affect their individual circumstances.
  • * Medicare Advantage plans see changes. Medicare Advantage participants should review 2013 plan changes as soon as they receive information from their providers. Changes could include costs such as premiums, deductibles and co-pays, as well as changes to covered procedures, tests and other provisions. Some plans may be eliminated, requiring enrollees to choose a new plan for 2013 or default to traditional Medicare Part B. Enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans continues to increase, with 10 percent more Medicare beneficiaries choosing these plans for 2012 compared to 2011. The average number of plans available to eligible individuals declined slightly from 24 plans in 2011 to 22 plans in 2012. The average number of plans for 2013 will not be known until later this year.

According to Walters, most Medicare beneficiaries should receive their Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) and Evidence of Coverage (EOC) from their existing Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plan providers by Sept. 30.

?Take time to review the information you receive and look at all of your Medicare options,? Walters said. ?You may find more affordable coverage through a different combination of plans - whether Medicare Advantage or traditional Medicare with Part D and Medigap plans. Keep in mind that you may see a lot of ads for Medicare plans, but there could be a plan that?s perfect for you that isn?t getting a lot of attention with ads and mailers.?

It?s important to compare this year?s coverage and understand the changes for 2013, especially when evaluating costs and anticipating healthcare needs for next year. ?If finding the right Medicare plan becomes time-consuming, confusing or stressful, remember that an expert like Allsup can do the in-depth research, sort through plans, and make it easier to identify and choose the option that best meets your specific needs and lifestyle.?

  • Medicare Annual Open Enrollment - Each year, people with Medicare get to explore new choices and pick the health and drug plans that work best for them. This year, the Open Enrollment period is starting earlier on October 15 and ending sooner December 7. Most people with Medicare can choose a "Part D" plan to help them pay for prescription drugs. And people who have chosen to enroll in a "Part C" Medicare Advantage plan for their basic health care services have the option of staying in that plan, choosing a different plan, or going back to the Original Medicare program.

Bacteria on marine sponges can develop capacity to move and inhibit biofilm formation

Bacteria on marine sponges can develop capacity to move and inhibit biofilm formation

Thursday, September 6, 2012

A new study shows that when enough bacteria get together in one place, they can make a collective decision to grow an appendage and swim away. This type of behavior has been seen for the first time in marine sponges, and could lead to an understanding of how to break up harmful bacterial biofilms, such as plaque on teeth or those found on internal medical devices like artificial heart valves.

Bacteria have ways of communicating with each other, and scientists have now identified a new signaling system that, when there is a critical mass of bacteria present, causes the bacteria to produce an appendage known as a flagellum that moves like a corkscrew and gives them the ability to swim away, inhibiting the formation of biofilm.

"Anything we can discover about this bacterial communication could be really important in understanding how bacteria become pathogenic in humans or how they form film on teeth or internal medical devices," said study co-author Dr. Russell Hill, Director of the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology in Baltimore, Maryland. "Understanding that process may help in the future for controlling biofilms."

It is estimated that pound by pound there are more bacteria on the Earth than all other life forms combined. They are simple organisms that consist of one cell and can only be seen through a microscope. However, bacteria have evolved ways to gather into densely populated and slimy communities called "biofilms," which attach to hard surfaces. They also know how to talk to each other, and can make group decisions about how to behave, called 'quorum sensing.'

Marine sponges in particular harbor complex and diverse bacterial communities, in some cases as much as 30-40% of the sponge's biomass. This high density of bacteria is an ideal place to study signaling, or how bacteria talk to each other using small chemical molecules. Just like in a business meeting, once enough bacteria gather in one place?or a quorum is met?a decision about their collective behavior can be made. This 'quorum sensing' is responsible for a number of cellular processes, including triggering molecular mechanisms that can make the surface of the ocean light up at night and the gathering of bacteria that causes plaque on teeth, otherwise known as biofilm.

The bacteria that colonize and are dependent on these marine sponges use quorum sensing to activate their locomotion when their population becomes dense, naturally limiting the amount of biofilm they form.

"This precise calibration of the bacterial interactions within the sponge may have evolved to help maintain a healthy, well-distributed symbiotic population," said study coauthor Clay Fuqua of Indiana University. "Similar mechanisms may be at play in other complex microbial communities within hosts such as those within human intestines and in symbiotic plants

This new study by scientists from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology, Indiana University, and University of Colorado Denver's School of Medicine, is published in the September 2012 issue of Molecular Microbiology.

Judy Henderson, Home Depot Cashier Fired While Battling Cancer ...

Home Depot has agreed to pay a former cashier $100,000 for firing her while she was on unpaid leave battling cancer.

Judy Henderson, who started working for Home Depot in Maryland in 1997, was fired in 2010 after notifying the company that she would extend her sick leave longer than expected because of a cancerous tumor. The company cited a seasonal slowdown as the reason for terminating Henderson, but not before hiring a new cashier to replace her.

Under the settlement reached Tuesday, Home Depot will be forced to pay Henderson $100,000 and also give anti-discrimination training to employees at the company, according to court documents.

Stephen Holmes, a Home Depot spokesman, said in an email to The Huffington Post that the Atlanta-based retailer does not admit any wrongdoing in its recent settlement with Henderson.

?We ... do not believe we violated the law with respect to Ms. Henderson, as we have accommodated her on numerous occasions in different ways throughout her thirteen years of employment -- including four and half years of cumulative leave,? Holmes added.

Home Depot isn?t the only retailer that has faced allegations it illegally dismissed disabled staff. Several years ago, a Wal-Mart employee who suffered from a heart condition that causes shortness of breath and difficulty walking was denied a handicap parking space and then fired when he filed a complaint.

Workplace discrimination cases have risen to record levels in the U.S., according to a government study released earlier this year. In 2011, the U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission received an all-time annual high of 99,947 complaints alleging worker discrimination. About 26 percent charged employers with discriminating on the basis of a disability.

Compared with other industrialized nations, the U.S. has a poor track record when it comes to accommodating disabled workers. A 2009 study of 22 ?rich countries? found the U.S. is the only one that does not provide paid sick leave for a worker undergoing a 50-day cancer treatment. It is also one of only three rich nations that does not give paid leave to a worker missing 5 days because of the flu.

Recent efforts that aim to force private companies to grant employees more paid sick time have met with limited success.

A spokesman for Starbucks stated: <blockquote>'While Christopher was expressing his own views in the video, the disparaging remarks about our customers and company are unacceptable and out of line with our commitment to our customers and partners (employees).'</blockquote>

  • Adding A Slice Of Cheese, Free Of Charge

In 2009, a female Dutch McDonalds employee was fired after she gave a colleague a cheeseburger instead of the cheaper hamburger that had been paid for, The Telegraph reports. A Dutch court ruled that the firing was too severe a punishment and ordered McDonald's to pay the ex-employee the full salary for what were the remaining five-months on her contract, as well as legal fees.

Qantas, Emirates ink partnership deal

(AP) ? Qantas Airways Ltd. announced Thursday that it has signed a 10-year partnership deal with rival Emirates in a bid to boost the Australian airline's struggling international division.

Under the alliance, Qantas will move its hub for European flights from Singapore to Dubai, coordinate with Emirates on ticket pricing and scheduling and apply a benefit-sharing model starting in April 2013. The deal is subject to regulatory approval.

Qantas said it will end its 17-year alliance with International Airlines Group's wholly owned subsidiary British Airways on March 31, 2013.

Neither Emirates nor Qantas will take equity in the other under the deal.

"This is the most significant partnership the Qantas Group has ever formed with another airline, moving past the traditional alliance model to a new level," Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said in a statement. "It will deliver benefits to all parts of the Group."

The deal is an effort by Qantas to save its money-bleeding international operation. Last month, the airline reported a 245 million Australian dollar ($249 million) annual loss in profits, blaming the result on rising fuel prices, a series of worker strikes and its international division, which lost AU$450 million. It was the first time since Qantas went private in 1995 that the airline ? nicknamed the "Flying Kangaroo" ? reported a net loss.

"A key objective is to make Qantas International strong and viable, and bring it back to profitability," Joyce told reporters. "This partnership will help us do that."
