Empowerhouse Wins Affordability Contest at Solar Decathlon By Betsy Kraat

WASHINGTON, DC--Empowerhouse, the team of students from Parsons The New School for Design, Milano School of International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy at The New School, and Stevens Institute of Technology, were named the winners of the first contest announced in the Solar Decathlon competition in the category of affordability.

The team tied with Purdue University in the contest, with both teams achieving construction costs of under $250,000.

Empowerhouse achieved the lowest construction costs of all 19 teams, at $229,890, which was due in large part to the team's partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Washington, DC, and the DC Department of Housing and Community Development. From the start, the students were focused on creating a new model for affordable, energy-efficient housing for DC Habitat, which resulted in a home that will be ultimately sited in the underserved DC neighborhood of Deanwood. A Habitat family was recently selected to live in the house, a single mother with three young children, who visited the house for the first time at the start of the Decathlon.

Architecture and engineering students, working with students in the Community Development Finance Project at the Milano School, and with representatives at DC Habitat, constantly refined the design to make certain it would meet the budget goals. One of the key ways in which the team kept the budget under the $250,000 mark was through the use of Passive House principles, one of the leading international energy standards.

German parliament passes expanded euro fund (AP)

BERLIN ? German lawmakers on Thursday overwhelmingly approved expanding the powers of the eurozone bailout fund, a major step toward tackling the sprawling debt crisis, in a vote that also helped strengthen Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition government.

The measure had been largely expected to pass the lower house of parliament, but a lively debate ahead of the vote reflected how divided Germans remain over their role as Europe's economic power.

Of 611 lawmakers present, 523 voted in favor, while 85 voted against it. Only three lawmakers abstained, meaning that Germany in the future will be guaranteeing loans to the bailout fund, the so-called European Financial Stability Facility, or EFSF, of up to euro211 billion, rather than euro123 billion so far.

The vote had highlighted tensions in Merkel's center-right coalition that was strained by threats of dissent from many members who balked at the cost of propping up the eurozone's strugglers.

Opposition leaders had said going in that if Merkel's coalition has to rely on their votes, it would be a sign that her strife-prone and increasingly unpopular government is finished.

Yet after a night of intense lobbying, a majority of coalition members ? 315 ? voted in favor of the measure, enough to have ensured its passage even without opposition support.

"This shows the clear determination of the coalition on this issue," Rainer Bruederle, parliamentary leader of Merkel's junior partner, the Free Democrats, told n-tv broadcaster after the vote. "We have made an important decision for Europe."

Yet Frank Schaeffler, also of the Free Democrats, argued that bailout measures have worsened Greece's economic situation.

"Despite all arguments, the first bailout did not make the situation for Greece better, but worse," Schaeffler said. "Expanding the fund will make the situation even worse."

The lawmakers ? under close scrutiny from jittery markets ? were voting on European leaders' decision in July to increase the effective lending capacity of the fund to euro440 billion ($595 billion) and give it new powers, such as buying the bonds of shaky countries or lending money to governments before they get into a full-blown crisis.

Though Merkel described the euro ahead of the vote as "our common future" and said approving the beefed-up bailout fund was "of the very, very greatest significance," discussions went deep into the night Wednesday, in an attempt to win over dissenting members of her governing coalition.

On Wednesday, Finland voted in favor of expanding the fund's powers despite earlier threats to pull out of a rescue plan for Greece.

The fund expansion has to be ratified by all 17 eurozone nations to take force.

Germany's upper house of parliament is expected to pass the measure on Friday.

    Dinniman, Brubaker to Host Prostate Cancer Awareness Event ...

    WEST CHESTER (September 26) ? State Senators Andy Dinniman and Mike Brubaker will hold a Prostate Cancer Awareness event on Tuesday, September 27 at noon in the Capitol East Wing Rotunda in Harrisburg.

    Dinniman and Brubaker, both prostate cancer survivors, will help raise awareness about the disease and encourage men to recognize the indicators and risks of prostate cancer, the leading type of cancer in Pennsylvania men.

    Dinniman, who underwent successful prostate cancer surgery this year, said that the statistics he learned about the disease upon his diagnosis were eye-opening.

    It is estimated that nearly 2 million American men are living with prostate cancer. It strikes 1 in 6 men. In fact, a non-smoking man is more likely to develop prostate cancer than he is to develop colon, bladder, melanoma, lymphoma and kidney cancers combined, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

    ?Understandably, this is not an issue that most men feel comfortable talking about, but it?s one that affects so very many of us,? Dinniman said. ?Often it is very curable, and the outcome is always better if it is caught earlier. The bottom line is being alive and healthy is worth a little discomfort in your doctor?s office. As men, we owe it to ourselves, as well as to our children and families, to get checked out.?

    ?Health care professionals agree that early diagnosis is the key to successful treatment for prostate cancer,? said Brubaker, who underwent successful surgery for the disease in 2008. ?I hope that this event will help more men identify the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer to prevent this disease from claiming more lives.?

    Dinniman and Brubaker also introduced a resolution recognizing September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month today.

    Most melanomas are brown to black looking lesions. Signs that might indicate a malignant melanoma include change in size, shape, color or elevation of a mole. The appearance of a new mole during adulthood, or new pain, itching, ulceration or bleeding of an existing mole should be checked.?

    If you have any questions about something that could be skin cancer, please make an appointment with a doctor and get it checked out. Prevention also plays a key role here and you should use sunscreen (spf 30 or greater) when you are out in the sun. If it is an overcast day, you can still wear sunscreen to be on the safe side. If you have children, you might want to consider using a higher spf than 30.
