Sport: Glasgow Warriors coach Sean Lineen has mixed emotions after Murrayfield draw

Warriors' Al Kellock goes over for a try as Glasgow stage a spirited fightback at Murrayfield

SEAN LINEEN cut a frustrated figure despite watching his Glasgow Warriors side fight back from 10 points behind to snatch a draw in a dramatic Murrayfield clash.

Glasgow lost the services of Rory Lamont who was taken to hospital for a precautionary scan after a head knock in only his second run-out since rejoining the Warriors.

Edinburgh then surged into a 23-13 lead after 55 minutes, courtesy of Tim Visser's try double, a Ross Rennie try and eight points from Greig Laidlaw's boot.

But Warriors replacement Ruaridh Jackson claimed Glasgow's third try three minutes from time to level the scores.

Scotland fly-half Jackson was denied further heroics as he missed the subsequent conversion and a last-minute penalty in blustery winds, but the Warriors' unbeaten league run was extended to seven matches.

Alastair Kellock and Colin Shaw also scored tries for Glasgow, with Duncan Weir kicking eight points.

Lineen was frustrated with the opening exchanges of either half and at missing the opportunity to claim victory.

He said: "First half wasn't great. Again. We didn't start well, our discipline was poor and we hung off them in defence.

"At times it wasn't pretty but we scrambled and hung in there.

"At the beginning of the second half the momentum was with Edinburgh.

"We dug back and we could've won the game at the end there. We didn't."

Prolific Dutch winger Visser, who will qualify for Scotland in June, scored twice in three second half minutes, both scores being awarded after close inspection from the television match official.

Lineen was reluctant to criticise the decisions, particularly the first which appeared marginal.

Lineen added: "Visser did a lot of the hard work and we could've stopped it a lot earlier. That's our fault.

"At least one of them it appeared he had dropped the ball over the line - he actually said that to one of our players.

"The lad's very difficult to tackle and he was outstanding in his running so we should've stopped him a lot earlier than the try line."

Edinburgh head coach Michael Bradley was upbeat despite the draw, with the teams set to meet at Firhill on New Year's Day.

"Glasgow are nine points ahead of us in this league and deservedly so," he said.

"They weren't going to give up easily. A couple of things went our way at the start of the second half and then they did what they do, which is kept the pressure on us, and we weren't able to close out the game.

"The two tries we got in the second half were exceptional work by the boys and for Tim to get the call on the TMO was great.

"Glasgow, as we knew, came back at us and we just weren't able to control the last 20 minutes. They were very dominant in the last 20 minutes and kept us under pressure.

"With a couple of minutes to go it was looking difficult for us and they had two kicks to win it.

"From 20 minutes out I was delighted with a potential win and with two minutes to go I was happy enough to get a draw."

Joe Lieberman: "I don't think Congress has ever been as bad as it is today." (The Christian Science Monitor)

Independent Senator Joseph Lieberman chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Elected to the Senate in 1988, he ran as an independent in 2006 after losing Connecticut's Democratic primary. He spoke at the Dec. 13 Monitor breakfast in Washington.

Why public approval of Congress is so low:

"Because I don't think Congress has ever been as bad as it is today. Here is a time of very serious, painful economic hardship ... and a debt that is threatening our future, national debt, and we really haven't done anything about it."

Whether members of Congress are using non-public information for personal financial gain:

"I don't have any evidence that there is insider trading by members of Congress.... A lot of people around the country ... think there is.... It is very important that Congress make clear with legislative action that members of Congress ... are covered by insider-trading laws."

President Obama's response to Iran's capture of an American spy drone:

"I wish that we had found a way to at least go in and destroy it.... It would have been very difficult to rescue it.... I say that with humility because I wasn't in the [White House] Situation Room...."

US policy toward Iran:

"I don't think we have done enough to support regime change. It needs to be done artfully because it is not one of those cases where we want to go in and start endorsing opposition" candidates.

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich saying the Palestinians are an "invented" people:

"To me, the important fact is, the Palestinians are a people today and any resolution of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has to be between two peoples, two nations."

Calls for the Transportation Security Administration to create passenger advocates at airports to deal with complaints about searches:

"It is worth thinking about, but I am not jumping to endorse it.... I am an admirer of TSA."

No. 14 Xavier tops So. Illinois 87-77 in Hawaii (AP)

HONOLULU ? Tu Holloway scored 21 points and No. 14 Xavier ended a three-game losing streak with an 87-77 victory over Southern Illinois on Sunday in the seventh-place game of the Diamond Head Classic.

Before a sparse, morning crowd on Christmas Day, the Musketeers won for the first time since Dec. 10, when they beat Cincinnati in a game cut short in the closing seconds by brawling and mayhem on the court.

This was the first three-game losing streak for Xavier under coach Chris Mack and first since the 2007-08 season.

Mark Lyons scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Musketeers (9-3). Andre Walker and Travis Taylor added 13 apiece for Xavier, which made 36 of 48 free throws. The Salukis (3-8) were led by Dantiel Daniels' 22 points.

Southern Illinois cut it to 68-64 at 8:45 after a 3-point play by Daniels, but an 8-1 run gave the Musketers a 9-point cushion.

Japan emperor praises nation for tackling disaster (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's Emperor Akihito praised the compassion of a nation striving to overcome the earthquake and tsunami disasters, as he waved from his palace balcony to throngs of well-wishers for his 78th birthday Friday.

Akihito expressed gratitude to all who have worked in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which devastated northeastern Japan and left 20,000 people dead or missing. Those he thanked included military personnel, residents of northeastern Japan, volunteers, workers at a hobbled nuclear plant and overseas contributors to relief efforts.

"Looking back on this year, I must say this has been a truly distressing year, dominated by disasters," he said in a statement from the Imperial Household Agency.

"I feel that the Japanese people have come together as a nation to squarely face the disaster," said Akihito, smiling next to his wife, Empress Michiko, who was dressed in a pale beige dress.

He was accompanied by his two sons and their wives.

Akihito, the son of Hirohito ? who announced Japan's surrender after World War II ? said Japanese people have learned their lesson from history and have vowed never to go to war again. He urged everyone not to forget that lesson of peace, despite the passage of time.

Akihito was hospitalized last month for a fever and an infection, but appeared to be in good health. He said he felt better and thanked people for worrying about his health.

Akihito has three eligible male successors ? his two sons and a grandson.

Japan's emperor, revered as divine during the wartime years, now has a largely ceremonial function as a "symbol of the nation."

27 years later, 'subway vigilante' victim dies

By msnbc.com staff and NBC News

A man who was injured by Manhattan subway gunman Bernhard Goetz has been found dead in what appears to be a drug overdose 27 years to the day after the shooting, NBCNewYork.com reported Friday.

James Ramseur, one of four then-teenagers wounded in the notorious 1984 incident, was discovered dead in a Bronx motel room on Thursday, with two empty prescription pill bottles next to the bed. The labels were scratched off of the bottles,?The New York Daily News?reported.

His death is being investigated as an apparent overdose and as a possible suicide, sources told The Daily News. They said Ramseur, 45, checked into the motel Tuesday and was scheduled to check out Thursday morning.?

His body was found by the motel manager who went into his room after he didn't return the keys?Thursday, The Daily News said. No note was left.

Ramseur was freed from prison last year after serving 25 years for a rape, according to NBCNewYork.com. He was one of four black teens shot by Goetz on a train on Dec. 22, 1984, in a shooting that earned Goetz the nickname of "subway vigilante" by city newspapers.

Goetz claimed he opened fire because the teenagers were trying to rob him; they said they had simply asked him for five dollars. What is indisputable was that?after shooting and wounding all four teens, Goetz ran off of the subway car, fled the city and didn't turn himself in until eight days after the shooting.

Ramseur suffered a severe wound and was in a coma briefly afterward.

The shooting divided New York, with some hailing Goetz as a hero who had stood up against petty subway crime and others calling him a racist.

At his trial, a mostly white jury?acquitted Goetz of all charges except illegal weapons possession. He served 250 days on Rikers Island.

According to Biography.com, Goetz still lives in New York City and has?opened a store called?Vigilante Electronics.
