Showing the way to improved water-splitting catalysts: Chemists identify the mechanism by which such catalysts work

ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) ? Scientists and engineers around the world are working to find a way to power the planet using solar-powered fuel cells.

Such green systems would split water during daylight hours, generating hydrogen (H2) that could then be stored and used later to produce water and electricity. But robust catalysts are needed to drive the water-splitting reaction. Platinum catalysts are quite good at this, but platinum is too rare and expensive to scale up for use worldwide. Several cobalt and nickel catalysts have been suggested as cheaper alternatives, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. And no one has been able to determine definitively the mechanism by which the cobalt catalysts work, making it difficult to methodically design and construct improved catalysts.

Now chemists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have determined the dominant mechanism for these cobalt catalysts. Their findings illuminate the road to the development of better catalysts -- even suggesting a route to the development of catalysts based on iron, an element that is plentiful and cheap and could offer part of the answer to our energy woes.

"We've worked out this mechanism, and now we know what to do to make a really great catalyst out of something that's really cheap as dirt," says Harry Gray, the Arnold O. Beckman Professor of Chemistry at Caltech and senior author of a paper that describes the findings in the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). "This work has completely changed our thinking about which catalyst designs to pursue."

A major barrier to improving the performance of man-made catalysts has been the lack of understanding of the mechanism -- the chemical pathway that such catalysts follow leading to the production of hydrogen. As with any multistep manufacturing project, chemists need to know what is involved in each reaction that takes place -- what goes in, what changes take place, and what comes out -- in order to maximize efficiency and yield.

Three mechanisms have been suggested for how the cobalt catalysts help make hydrogen -- one proposed by a French team, one developed by Caltech researchers, including Nate Lewis and Jonas Peters, and a third suggested more recently by a former graduate student in Gray's group, Jillian Dempsey (PhD '10). Until now, no one has managed to prove definitively which mechanisms actually occur or whether one was dominant, because the reactions proceed so quickly that it is difficult to identify the chemical intermediates that provide evidence of the reactions taking place.

These cobalt catalysts are complexes that involve the metal bound to many different functional groups, or ligands. In the current study, Caltech postdoctoral scholar Smaranda Marinescu was able to add a set of ligands to cobalt, making the reaction slow down to the point where the researchers could actually observe the key intermediate using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. "Once we could see that key intermediate by NMR and other methods, we were able to look at how it reacted in real time," Gray says. They saw that Dempsey's mechanism is the predominant pathway that these catalysts use to generate hydrogen. It involves a key reactive intermediate gaining an extra electron, forming a compound called cobalt(II)-hydride, which turns out to be the mechanism's active species.

In a previous PNAS paper, work by Gray and lead author Carolyn Valdez suggested that the Dempsey mechanism was the most likely explanation for the detected levels of activity. The new paper confirms that suggestion.

"We now know that you have to put another electron into cobalt catalysts in order to get hydrogen evolution," Gray says. "Now we have to start looking at designs with ligands that can accept that extra electron or those that can make atomic cobalt, which already has the extra electron."

Gray's group is now working on this latter approach. Moreover, these results give his group the information they need to develop an extremely active iron catalyst, and that will be their next big focus.

"We know now how to make a great catalyst," he says. "That's the bottom line."

In addition to Marinescu and Gray, Jay Winkler, a faculty associate and lecturer at Caltech, was also a coauthor on the paper, "Molecular mechanisms of cobalt-catalyzed hydrogen evolution." The work was supported by the National Science Foundation Center for Chemical Innovation in Solar Fuels as well as Chevron Phillips Chemical.

Nell McAndrew on Confidence ? and Bad Breath!

Would you be ready to be whisked off your feet by a tall, dark, handsome stranger? Would you be ready to salsa into the sunset with your partner? For many women the answer would be no. A new survey has shown that two thirds of women in the UK (21 million) are plagued with a lengthy list of body concerns including smelly breath, body odour, bad skin, bad hair days and their very own granny pants! The research by Macleans Confidence revealed that the leading confidence-crusher for British women is smelly breath and bad teeth, with a huge eight out of ten (78%) of women declaring bad breath and teeth as their number one turn-off when getting ready for a romantic moment. This video features model Nell McAndrew and psychologist Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic giving advice to those women who could do with a confidence boost. *This Saturday Nell McAndrew is challenging people to get up close and personal on the dance floor and prove they have what it takes to be confident and ready for romance at anytime. Nell and leading dance instructor Damien Evans will be waltzing their way through Brent Cross Shopping Centre between 12 noon and 2pm on Saturday 25th April 2009, in the ultimate, free-for-all confidence boosting dance session. Why We Love Roth 401K | Tamarind Financial Planning

The evolution of our tax code has created an alphabet soup of retirement account options, making our choice of investment accounts for retirement confusing. A case in point being the difference between a Roth IRA ?or 401k, and a Traditional IRA or 401k. A personal financial manager can help you understand these differences, as well as helping you decide which will be the most benefit to you and your financial goals.

What is the difference between a Roth IRA or 401k, and a Traditional IRA or 401k? Simply, contributions to a Traditional IRA or 401k are made pre-tax, reducing your current tax burden, while Roth contributions are made post-tax. However, during retirement, distributions from a traditional IRA are taxed as ordinary income while Roth account distributions are taken tax-free. Growth is tax-free in both cases ? no capital gains tax or tax on investment income is assessed on assets in either plan.

The way the math works, if tax rates stay exactly the same, the Roth and the Traditional IRA/401k will end up with the same after-tax retirement benefit in the future. If tax rates go up, however, the Roth delivers higher after-tax income in retirement. In other words, when deciding among investment accounts for retirement, a Roth IRA or 401k is a wonderful hedge against higher taxes at retirement. When you consider the current fiscal crisis and the level of debt this country has built over the past decade, an environment of rising taxes is likely. By investing in a Roth plan, you can protect some of your retirement income from higher tax rates.

Roth vs. Traditional IRA/401k

  • Roth IRA contributions are limited based on income. HOWEVER?many employer 401k plans now have a Roth 401k option. These plans do not have income limitations.
  • Distributions from Roth accounts are tax free in retirement. Although you receive no tax deferral when you contribute to your plan, a Roth can be an effective strategy to hedge against higher taxes in the future. Balancing your retirement dollars between Roth and Traditional retirement plans adds a layer of diversification of future income sources and a way to hedge your retirement tax bills.
  • In a Roth account, there is no annual minimum distribution required at age 70 ? as there is with a Traditional plan ? so tax free growth can continue throughout your lifetime. This can be a terrific tax-efficient strategy for leaving assets to your kids ? while still having those assets available to you during your lifetime.
  • Converting an IRA from traditional to Roth is another way to build Roth assets into your financial plan and also has no income limitations currently. However, when you convert, income taxes are due on the amount converted. A competent personal finance planner or tax advisor can help you create a conversion strategy.

Many people believe they will be in a lower tax bracket in retirement because they won?t be earning as much ? concluding that a Roth plan does not make sense for them. However, unless you will be relying mostly on Social Security Income in retirement, chances are that your taxable income in retirement will be high because distributions from Traditional retirement plans are taxed as ordinary income.

A Roth IRA or 401k provides a powerful strategy to hedge your retirement tax bills and extend your tax-free growth benefit. If your employer provides a Roth option in your 401k plan, you have easy access to building your Roth retirement accounts.

At Tamarind Financial Planning, we will use our individual financial planning strategies and personal investment management techniques to help you decide whether you can benefit from a Roth, as well as exactly how to best diversify your investments for retirement.

Crude oil held back by manufacturing news

Published: Sept. 5, 2012 at 5:25 PM

NEW YORK, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Crude oil prices held under $96 a barrel Wednesday, with prices undercut by a string of weak manufacturing data.

The Institute of Supply Management said Tuesday U.S. manufacturing declined for a third month in August. On Wednesday, Markit said the Purchasing Managers Index for Europe fell in August from 47.5 percent to 47.2 percent.

Traders also learned Wednesday China's PMI for service-oriented businesses dropped to a 12-month low.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, West Texas Intermediate crude oil for October delivery closed at $95.52 on a late gain of 22 cents. Natural gas added 0.1 cent to $2.796 per million British thermal units.

Home heating oil gained 1.24 cents to $3.13 per gallon. Reformulated blendstock gasoline added 1.37 cents to $2.9635 per gallon.

At the pump, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was unchanged at $3.824 per gallon Wednesday, AAA reported.

Get Better Results When Making Home Improvements By Following ...

Maybe you'd like to save money or you just have some specific changes in mind that you don't trust to anyone else. Whatever your motivation for taking matters into your own hands, here are some home improvement tips that will make your home inprovements easier.

Windows

Light is a premium often overlooked in home improvement projects. There are far, far more rooms in the world that are too dim than there are rooms that are too bright. Adding more light fixtures is almost always a wise home improvement job, and often a fairly simple one. In more extensive renovation work, installing more windows accomplishes similar results.

Sometimes the littlest things make the biggest differences when it comes to home improvement. Try adding some curtains to the windows of the house to spice them up. Your home will feel more comfortable instantaneously. It is also a relatively cheap decor item, so it won't break your wallet to do this either.

Try installing some flower boxes outside your home. Try installing them in your windows or on the front porch railings. They are a relatively cheap home improvement project too. You have to buy soil and regularly maintain the flowers though. If these aren't for you, try buying gardens in pots and placing them on your porch or front steps.

Are you planning on painting the trim around your windows as a part of your home improvements? Here is a trick that will save you some time. If you have a steady hand, you do not need to mask off the glass when you are painting the trim. If you get a small lap of paint on the glass, simply remove the wet paint from the glass with a damp cloth wrapped around the blade of a putty knife. If the paint has already dried, you can use a razor blade to remove it.

Doors And Windows

When painting the exterior of your home, use architectural details, doors and windows to add visual interest by painting them (or around them) with an accent color that coordinates with your main color. This keeps your color scheme from looking too monochromatic and helps interesting design features to stand out.

Make sure you have weather stripping around all of your doors and windows. This helps you with multiple problems. It keeps air from leaking out keeping your house cooler or warmer when you're running your A/C or heat. It can also keep little critters from finding their way in. It's also good if you're in an area that floods a lot, to keep water from seeping in.

Interesting information for you could be the one about Velfac.

Make sure your home is properly insulated through the use of weather stripping on your home's doors and windows. This helps eliminate and reduce air leaks and improves your heating or cooling system's efficiency. For your efforts, you will enjoy lower electric bills and a home that is cooler in warmer weather and warmer in colder weather.

Sealing air leaks is an inexpensive way to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Unsealed cracks and openings are one of the leading causes of heat loss in the average home. Common problem areas include around doors and windows, around pipes, wires and ducts that lead outdoors and around recessed light fixtures. Use caulk to seal small cracks and expanding spray foam for larger gaps and openings.

These tips will help empower you to do your own repairs, replace what needs replacing, or remodel any room in the house, if you so choose. Having an amazing home doesn't have to be something you leave to other people, and by following tips like these, you'll get more skilled and more capable at making all the home improvements you dream of making.

Ovarian cancer: Often, a silent killer | SILive.com

TAKE CARE ?

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - ALL SHORES - More than 20,000 women in the U.S. will find out this year that they have ovarian cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Every year, more than 15,000 women die from the disease.

While it's a fairly uncommon disease ? ovarian cancer makes up around 3 percent of cancers in women ? it causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.

That's in part because ovarian cancer is not often caught in the early stages. When it is, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. However, just 19 percent of cases are diagnosed at that early stage.

Ovarian cancer has no reliable symptoms, and in many cases, there are no symptoms at all. When there are symptoms, they can include: Persistent gastrointestinal problems such as nausea and gas; frequent or urgent urination; changes in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea); bloating or pain in the abdomen; trouble eating; feeling of fullness; unexplained or unusual fatigue; postmenopausal bleeding; unexpected weight gain or loss; back pain, and pain during intercourse.

These symptoms are vague and seem somewhat common, but the important factor is their persistence. If a woman experiences any of these conditions for more than two weeks, she should check with her doctor.

A SURVIVOR ?

Ovarian cancer survivor and Eltingville resident Jacqueline Shapiro, a patient at Richmond University Medical Center, experienced no symptoms at all. Ms. Shapiro, 62, said her doctor found an ovarian cyst during a routine pelvic sonogram and wasn't initially worried. But when he saw a change in the cyst at another visit, he told her he wanted to take out her ovaries the following week.

"He felt I'd be fine," she said. "He said he could do it laparoscopically, but he wanted a surgeon there, just in case. While I was on the table, test results came back that it was Stage 1 cancer. They did a radical hysterectomy right there."

Ms. Shapiro had chemo treatments after her surgery and has now been cancer-free for four years.

RISKS, CAUSES ?

Researchers don't know exactly what causes most ovarian cancers, but they have identified some risk factors, including a family history of ovarian, breast and colorectal cancer. Obesity and age (a woman's risk increases as she ages) are additional risk factors. Women who have had children have a lower risk of ovarian cancer.

For a small percentage of women, ovarian cancer is caused by an inherited gene mutation. The relevant genes, known as breast cancer gene 1 (BRCA1) and breast cancer gene 2 (BRCA2), were first identified in families with multiple cases of breast cancer. Doctors have now learned that women with these mutations also have a significantly increased risk of ovarian cancer.

There's also a genetic connection for ovarian cancer that can be traced to an inherited syndrome called hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). Women in HNPCC families have an elevated risk for cancers of the ovaries, as well as the uterine lining (endometrium), colon and stomach.

Currently, there are no specific tests to screen accurately for ovarian cancer. Pap tests screen for cervical cancer, not ovarian cancer. But several tests exist whose combined results can help diagnose the disease ? or at least be suggestive enough to warrant a biopsy, the only way to make a conclusive diagnosis.

These tests include a blood test for CA-125, a protein that can be a biomarker for ovarian cancer, a transvaginal ultrasound and a vaginal-rectal pelvic exam, also called a bimanual exam, which allows the ovaries to be felt from different sides.

Treatment for ovarian cancer is usually a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Radiation treatment is not commonly used. Of course, every woman's treatment plan will be different, tailored to her individual situation.

Report: Journalist confronts Tanzania police, dies

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The Media Institute of Southern Africa says a prominent journalist has been killed in a confrontation with Tanzanian police who were clashing with rallying supporters of the country's biggest opposition party.

It quotes witnesses as saying that Daudi Mwangosi of Channel Ten TV demanded to know why police had arrested a fellow journalist. In the ensuing confrontation, Mwangosi was surrounded and being assaulted by police. Then, the institute says, a blast was heard and Mwangosi was seen lying on the ground before he died.

The institute's Levi Kabwato expressed shock in a statement Monday and said the safety of journalists in southern Africa has become a growing concern.

Tanzania recently banned a newspaper critical of the government and a journalist in Zambia was attacked by a politician.

But now, advanced?analytical tools and techniques, such as predictive modeling, are also making it?possible for organizations to glimpse into the future and make informed predictions?that they can then develop into targeted solutions.

The data used can be surprising, for example using commuting times to and from work?

as a predictor of employees' future success:

"For example, advanced analytics is helping leading organizations retain top talent?

and mitigate churn by identifying employees who are potential flight risks. This?kind of analysis may include everything from past and current employee data and?performance ratings to mentoring relationships, compensation levels, personal?networking activity and even daily commute time. Advanced analytics tools are also?helping organizations beef up their leadership pipelines by looking deep into their?workforces to anticipate which employees are most likely to reach the top."
As with much HR metrics, when taken to an extreme there is a concern that the?subtleties of human motivation are left out of the equation. Contrast this approach?by Deloitte, which seems to reduce employees to sets of numbers, to ?UK HR?consultant Duncan Brown's recent comments on using employees' enthusiasms to drive?employee engagement.?

Gorman sees a positive in this, however:

"While this might look like bad news for HR - do they really understand the?

dynamics of business? - it actually creates the beginning of the business case for?increased investment in workforce planning, productivity and engagement."?

This is another example of how careful HR must be when interpreting data and?metrics.?

A current buzzword gaining currency relating to the need to be flexible in how HR?responds to future risks and challenges is 'agility' (photo above by Shutterstock). Some insights are offered on?this here, here and here.?

In the first, Mike Richards argues in London Business School Business Strategy?Review: ??

"Organisational agility -- the ability to deal with rapidly changing circumstances?while out-executing the competition and stakeholder expectations -- is the core?differentiator of businesses these days, whether they are competitors or not. It?differentiates the winners from the losers, the victors from the victims and the?first from the worst. It determines which organisations survive and thrive, and?which don't."?
